What did O'Brien get out of it, anyway? Popularity with legislators?

I'd say it's more "Keep the likes of Officer Flanagan away from my daughter" than homophobia driving the TSA conversation. Even if Flanagan's equivalents at the TSA are technically doing their leering and smacking in the other room, behind a video screen, it's still creepy.

We've seen one small excerpt from what I am sure is a much longer discussion on condoms. I'm sure Pope Benny wasn't intentionally excluding female prostitutes and others from wearing jackets on the road to hell. Wait until the full work comes out before you make value judgements.

About the TSA screening procedures:
there has already been some blatant homophobia from Americans For Truth About Homosexuality. They think gay TSA agents shouldn't be allowed to do "pat down" procedures
“Isn’t it just as inappropriate for a gay male TSA agent to pat down male travelers as it is for a normal, heterosexual male TSA agent to pat down female travelers? The reality is, most traveling men would not want Barney Frank to pat them down at the airport security checkpoint. Neither would it be fair to assign Ellen DeGeneres to pat down female travelers.”

re: Why Charlie Lost
I'll add another factor to the list. We are a small state geographically so when Baker chose to blow off three whole counties (Berkshire, Franklin and Hampshire) by not setting foot in most of western Mass. that gets noticed. It sends a powerful message to folks that says f--k off, you don't matter to me and I could give a crap about your needs and your issues. Baker could have made political hay out of Patrick's promise from August 2007 (at Becket Town Hall) that all the unserved and underserved rural towns would be wired for broadband by 2010. Now the governor is saying that rural broadband will come by the end of 2012, but the fact is that this is "middle mile" to town centers, not "last mile" to actual homes where so many people need it because they are self employed.

@HesterPrynne, as I read your comment I couldn't stop thinking about the book I just finished reading about JFK titled, "The Kennedy Detail" by <a href="www.kennedydetail.com/authors.asp">">www.kennedydetail.com/authors.asp"> Gerald Blaine. </a> It was a crazy election because clearly Nixon was the favorite - However, what a mark JFK made on history in such a short presidency.

Yep. John Volpe was elected Governor here as a Republican, both in 1960 (despite JFK's extremely long Democratic Presidential coattails that year) and in 1964 (despite Barry Goldwater's extremely short Republican ones). His slogan? Vote the man -- not the party.
(Nicely comprehensive list of Baker's FOX-y tendencies.)
