“Delocated.” Watch it.
I’m gonna
give you some advice that will change your life for the better. You can thank
me later.
Actually, I
just said it in the title.
But it
bears repeating: watch Delocated.
You may
know Jon Glaser as Ehud Henkleman (call him Chris), the irreligious Rosh
Hashanah shofar player from Late Night with Conan O’Brien — last
episode tonight! sniff, sniff — where he was a longtime writer, or as Dave “Tiny Hands” Gordon,
or as one half, with Jon Benjamin, of the Fuggedabuddies.
Now, at
long last, Glaser has his own show (Adult Swim, Thursdays at 10:30), and it’s the
best thing to happen to TV since, well, at least since Conan and Colbert did
that string
dance-off the other night.
“Jon” and
his family “Susan” (Nadia Dajani) and “David” (Jacob Kogan) have been enrolled
in the Federal Witness Protection Program. So, naturally, they move from their suburban home to New York City
to star in a reality TV show. Don't worry, it's safe: their identities are concealed behind black balaclavas
and garbling voice modulators.
Glaser's fellow Conan writer and bit player Kevin Dorff is the Secret Service agent assigned to
protect the family, and ever-more-ubiquitous
Eugene Mirman plays Yvgeny Mirminski, the Russian mobster who tries to kill
“Jon” and his family between his open-mic standup gigs. (He’s a bad shot, as
Paul Rudd learns the hard way.)
Any further
written description of Delocated's understated and uncomfortable comedic sense, its pitch-perfect performances will
be unable to do the hilarity justice. (As Twain once said: “Explaining a joke
is like dissecting a frog: you understand it better, but the frog dies in the
process.”)
Just watch
this...
And, if you
like it...
WATCH: The Pilot
LISTEN: Jon Glaser’s
appearance on The Best Show on WFMU (streaming MP3)
And then
tune in next Thursday at 10:30 (it’s like desert after an Office/30 Rock main
course) and then the Thursday after that. Hopefully enough people will follow
suit that Delocated will get picked
up for another season where the episodes will be 30 minutes instead of 15.
