Music seen at SPACE Gallery, April 12, 2008
By CHAD CHAMBERLAIN | April 16, 2008
David Dondero might be one of indie-rock’s unsung heroes. Several of the genre’s more popular acts, such as Bright Eyes, have referenced him as a seminal and influential figure. He is often credited for being the first of his breed of agitated, acoustic indie-folk, with heart-breaking narratives and a hint of Southern pride.
SPACE Gallery welcomed him with table seating and candlelight. It was a relaxed atmosphere — perfect for a band tired and hung over, touring for three weeks going on five.
They performed most of the songs off their new album, Simple Love (Team Love Records, 2008). The album infuses elements of country music with the Dondero sound, and his six-member back-up band, the Entire State of Florida, provided this well with instruments like the theremin, dobro, and pedal steel.
The enthusiastic crowd was a gathering of forty people, fewer than expected. Yet it was a mix of old fans and new, singing along with the latest anthems from his extensive musical catalog.
After the show, David told me it was an ideal evening despite the small turnout. I realized that he might not be as bothered by his lack of fame as some of his fans are. Maybe this is why, after a musical career of more than 15 years, he continues to put out great records and perform them live with precise musicianship, with an unaffected manner. It was a valuable opportunity to see a musician like him in such an intimate setting, giving our small and colorful city a performance with just as much enthusiasm as he might give a sold-out crowd later on down the road.
