I was hoping that Mark Mylod's comedy might, like Bridesmaids, show that women could hold their own when it comes to subversive humor. And indeed there are resemblances between the films. Like Bridesmaids, this features a woman — Ally (Anna Faris) — who hates herself, is a member of a wedding, loses her job, has a kooky hobby that could be a new career, and seeks love in the wrong places while overlooking the guy whom everyone knows she will end up with anyway. The difference is that Bridesmaids is funny. This is smarmy and sentimental. And repugnant, starting with the premise. Ally reads that women who have slept with more than 20 guys are scorned by decent men and will never get married. Guess how many she's had? Since she can't sleep with anyone new, she needs to recycle one of the old ones, and asks horndog neighbor Colin (Chris Evans) to help Google them. It's all by the numbers, and they don't add up.
