Whether travelers are in search of fresh fish, are lost in South Boston, or both, the lucky ones might stumble upon this hidden gem. With simple white table cloths, friendly, fast service, and air-conditioning on full blast, Dry Dock Café is a little slice of Cape Cod in the city.

Don’t fight the urge to dive headfirst into two jumbo Maryland crab cakes ($8.95) — flaky, flavorful, and the size of full-size hamburgers — served with a side of creamy homemade rémoulade sauce. If you’re still hungry, try a cup of New England clam chowder ($2.95), full of clams, potatoes, and plenty of cream.

For some sizzle, there’s the fish and chips platter ($8.95), with battered and fried tender fish filets, a pile of French fries, feathery coleslaw, and tartar sauce on the side. Leave room to snack on fried calamari rings ($7.95), chewy and coated in a light golden-brown batter.

Dry Dock also has much to offer sandwich fans, especially when it comes to the Reuben ($5.75), which piles layer upon layer of corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing. Extra hands are required for the cheeseburger ($4.75), to keep the grilled beef patty, American cheese, lettuce, and tomato from slipping out the sides. And a classic favorite is the foot-long Caesar wrap ($3.95), crammed with romaine lettuce, garlic croutons, feta cheese, and Caesar dressing. With one mouth-watering dish after another, this café is anything but dry.

Dry Dock Café, located at 7 Drydock Avenue, in South Boston, is open Monday through Wednesday, from 5 am to 4 pm, and Thursday and Friday, from 5 to 9 pm. Call 617.951.2999.
