Buell found fame when she was asked to create a comic for the Saturday Evening Post. Little Lulu first appeared on the magazine’s back page in 1935, and it ran for a decade. The curly-haired Lulu and friends are drawn in a clear, streamlined, simple style that puts the jokes front and center. Lulu spawned comic books, animation, and merchandising, most prominently ads for Kleenex. Here we see dolls, mittens, contracts, and bills, as well as clipped comics — but no original drawings. One gag depicts three boys with moustaches and beards and, in the background, Lulu behind a table clipping a shaggy dog. A sign next to her reads: “Be a man! Whiskers only 1 cent.”
